KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES GATE Coordinator

Clearly defined roles and responsibilities for GATE administrators, coordinators, teachers, and parents are integral to the success of the GATE program. Each district decides the types of GATE program services it will provide. Districts designate a GATE coordinator at each school site. GATE parents have defined roles in the implementation of GATE programs. The roles and responsibilities of GATE coordinators and parents are provided below.

What are the responsibilities of the site GATE coordinator?

The School Site GATE Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the implementation and evaluation of the GATE program. The responsibilities of the GATE coordinator include the following:

Oversee GATE identification and placement procedures to ensure they are equitable, comprehensive, ongoing, and consistent with the current GATE plan.
Ensure the implementation of differentiated curriculum, instructional models, and strategies that are aligned with and extend the state academic content standards and curriculum frameworks within classrooms.
Ensure the participation of parents and community members in planning and evaluating GATE programs.
Conduct an annual evaluation of components of the GATE program including data from teacher, student, and parent surveys, a review of student academic progress, and the administration of the program. (i.e. AP, IB testing data, and site plan)
Oversee GATE budget expenditures that support the implementation of the gifted program that meets the identified standards based on assessed needs of the site. (i.e. AP and IB Exams, science fair, spelling bee, Math Field Day, Knowledge Bowl)
Implement procedures for consideration of the identification, testing and placement of a student.
Implement procedures for consideration of the identification and placement of a student who was identified as gifted or talented in the district from which the student transferred.
Coordinate the placement of GATE students with teachers who have training in gifted education.
Attend professional workshops and meetings to remain current on research and best practices in gifted education, when funding is available.
